In poker, a "stack" refers to the chips a player has in play at any given time during a poker game. Stacks are a crucial aspect of the game practically as a player needs one to be part of the game. They are also important strategically as a player's stack size can significantly influence their strategy and the way they play their hands.

Understanding Stacks

The size of a player's stack can vary greatly, from a short stack (few chips) to a deep stack (many chips).

The size of a player's stack is often measured in relation to the blinds and/or antes rather than in absolute chip value amounts. The ratio of the player's stack to the pot is known as their 'stack-to-pot ratio' or SPR. Both these ratios are key factors in determining the best play at a given point.

Playing Different Stack Sizes

Different stack sizes can require different strategies. Short stacks may need to play more aggressively to avoid being blinded out, while deep stacks can afford to play more conservatively and wait for strong hands.

Example of "Stack"

If a player has 5,000 chips in a tournament at the 100/200 blind level, you could say they have a stack of 5,000 chips or a stack of 25 big blinds.

In a cash game, if a player has $3,000 in chips with them at the casino, but has $2,000 in their pocket and $1,000 in play, Their stack would be $1,000.
