Team China Doubles Up

Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan

As we said a few moments ago, it wasn't going to take much for Team China to get all in. There was a pre-flop raise by Brazil and then a re-raise by China. Brazil called, with China still retaining some chips as they went to a {4-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {4-Hearts} flop. David Chiu, playing for Team China, clearly did not like the flop. He called for a conference with team captain Johnny Chan regarding what to do. Given that at least three-quarters of Team China's stack was already in the middle, it seemed ludicrous to fold -- but China had clearly bricked the flop completely. Chiu and Chan talked things over and then Chiu got the rest of Chinia's chips in the middle.

Brazil called with {7-} {8-} {9-} {10-}, a rundown that had flopped top pair. That left China's {A-} {2-} {3-} {9-} in very, very bad shape. But the turn was an improbable {A-Clubs} to give Team China the lead in the hand. They took down the pot -- and a double-up -- with a river {3-Diamonds}.

"See, I was right huh?" said Chan after the hand. "Now rush, rush!"

The State of Things

There's a good reason why Robert Williamson III stopped announcing the action -- there's nobody left to announce to. The only people here Chinese and Brazilian teammates, production staff, and media.

We really do expect that this will be the last level of the tournament. With 5,000 and 10,000 blinds, the shorter-stacked Chinese team will have a hard time not getting all the chips into the pot with any kind of hand -- especially in Pot-Limit Omaha.

Chinatown

Right now the tone of heads-up play is being set by Team China's Johnny Chan. He is relentlessly firing at Team Brazil and winning a great deal of the pots as a result. In a recent hand, Chan fearlessly bet the flop {9-Diamonds} {j-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}, the turn {6-Diamonds} and the river {4-Hearts}. Team Brazil called each of the first two bets, but not the third.

Team Greece Eliminated

Oh, the agony for Team Greece. Widely perceived as the underdog team in this tournament, the Greeks played with heart, skill and guile to make it all the way o the tournament bubble. There, with blinds high and stacks short, the Greeks ran into an unlucky situation. They moved all in with {9-Clubs} {9-Hearts} and were called by Team Brazil, which tabled a pair one pip better, {10-Hearts} {10-Spades}.

Nothing comes easy in poker, so of course the flop was all clubs, {4-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {7-Clubs}. The Greeks, behind in the hand, had the only club. They'd need a club to hit to stay alive, but the turn and river came {A-Hearts} {2-Diamonds}.

The bubble has finally burst. Greece finishes in third place, just outside the bubble.

Cooooooooold

With the hour late, the set empty, and the A/C blasting, it has gotten very, very cold on the set. Everyone is wrapped up in as many layers as can be found -- or shivering. One or the other. The players still seem focused on the task at hand, with little quarter given. The Greeks are the only ones who seem to have any emotion left, and even their spirits are flag as the sun starts to drag itself across the morning sky. (We presume. We can't actually see any part of the outdoors from where we are.)
