Madsen Misses Out On Big Opportunity

When we walked up to Jeff Madsen's table, we saw that he was involved in a huge pot. We missed the action that led up to it, but here is what we gathered. Madsen was one of three players that saw a flop of {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. The button was all in for 4,500 in chips, and Madsen, who was next to act, had 9100 chips out there, leading us to believe that he had raised. When we got to the table, his opponent had just pushed all in for 17,000 on top. Madsen, who had about 26,000, went deep into the tank. After 2-3 minutes of thought, Madsen reluctantly gave up his hand.

Opponent 1: {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Button: {q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Madsen immediately shook his head in disbelief when he saw his opponents hand, and continued to shake his head as the turn and river came out {j-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. We have to assume that Madsen would at least won the giant side pot, but as it is, Madsen will have to make due with his current stack of 26,000, which is above the starting stack.

Baker Eliminated

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
The room got a whole lot less pretty with Baker's elimination.
The room got a whole lot less pretty with Baker's elimination.

We saw four players go to a flop of {4-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {8-Hearts} and Brian Bumpis bet 2,100 from under the gun. Two players got out of the way and Amanda Baker raised to 8,500. Bumpis verified the raise with the dealer and then announced all in. Baker called and was at risk of elimination.

Baker: {7-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds}
Bumpis: {A-Clubs} {A-Diamonds}

Baker was behind but had plenty of outs to draw to and the {2-Hearts} turn was not one of them. The river also bricked when it came {9-Hearts} and Baker was eliminated.

O'Dell Bests Massey

Los Angeles Poker Pro Frankie O'Dell and Circuit regular Aaron Massey are two players that are on the positive side of their starting stacks to start this day 1 flight, and both players tangled in a recent pot.

We caught the action three handed on the turn, with the board reading {3-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}. Action checked to O'Dell who bet out 1,600 into a pot of about 2,500. Massey called in the small blind, and the other player folded. The river brought the {a-Diamonds}, and both players quickly checked. O'Dell showed {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for two pair, and Massey mucked. Both players were left with nearly identical stacks after the hand.

Hamidi Punishes on the Button

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

The hand began when the UTG player opened for 350, Amanda Baker called, the player in the cutoff called, Kataneh Hamidi called on the button and the big blind came along as well. The five players saw the flop come {J-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {4-Hearts}. The first two players checked, Baker bet 1,100, the cutoff folded, Hamidi called and the big blind raised to 4,500.

The UTG player and Baker folded and action was back on Hamidi. She then put out a large stack of her big denomination chips for a raise, approximately 28,000. The big blind was taken aback and glared at Hamidi. The big blind eventually folded and showed a jack.

Madsen Makes A Straight

Jeff Madsen is another name who is taking his second bullet in this tournament, and much like Owais Ahmed, he is off to a good start. Madsen was the first in the pot preflop, raising it up to 375. The player next to him called, as did the big blind.

The three players saw a flop of {q-Spades}{5-Hearts}{9-Spades}, and the big blind checked to Madsen, who fired out 650. His first opponent called, while the big blind elected to pass. The turn brought the {j-Hearts}, and Madsen bet out again, this time 1,250, and again his opponent called. The river came the {k-Clubs}, and Madsen fired a third bullet, 3,150 into the pot. His opponent thought shortly before making the call, then mucked when he saw Maddsen turn over {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for a rivered straight. That pot boosted Madsen's stack to 25,000.
