Volpe Nears the Two Million Mark

Paul Volpe
Paul Volpe

Paul Volpe just knocked out another player, and he's now very close to having the chip lead.

The board read {2-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}, when Volpe checked to Dutchman Leon Piso who moved all in from the button. Piso had 216,000 chips left, and Volpe needed about half a minuten before he made the call.

Volpe turned over {K-Hearts}{J-Spades}, and he was well in front against Piso's {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. The river was the {8-Clubs}, and Piso was knocked out.

The Dutchman explained shortly afterwards that Volpe had raised pre flop to 17,000, and he three-bet to 42,000. Volpe called, and opted to check-call 45,000 on the turn.

Piso was happy about his deep run, but questioned his own play on the final hand of his tournament. He cashed $32,871 for his 367th place finish.

Pyne Pressures Deeb

Richard Pyne
Richard Pyne

The table folded around to Shaun Deeb in the small blind who raised to 18,000. Richard Pyne, sitting to Deeb's left, checked his cards, eyed Deeb's stack, and pushed out two stacks of orange chips for a reraise to 200,000.

Deeb looked up at the ceiling, clearly not too happy about the situation. He had only 194,000 behind, and so the decision essentially was whether or not to risk his tourney life.

Finally after thinking for a half-minute Deeb let his hand go, flashing it at Pyne as he did. Pyne then turned over his cards for all to see {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} and scooped the pot.

An Un-Fair Turn of Events

Benjamin Alcober opened for a raise from under the gun, Ryan Fair three-bet to 43,000 from the hijack seat, and Alcober four-bet to 105,000. Fair five-bet to 167,000, Alcober moved all in for 405,000, and Fair called.

Alcober{a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Fair{k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop was safe, but the {k-Diamonds} spiked on the turn, giving Fair a set of kings. The river was the {9-Hearts}, and Fair doubled to over 800,000 chips.

Alcober, who was once our chip leader, now has only 206,000.

Batt Knocks Out Haigh

Over at the feature table, we have just lost one of the 12 remaining women in the field: Debbie Haigh. Action started with Jordan Batt raising to 18,000 in middle position. Haigh was the only caller out of the big blind, and the flop came down {q-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Clubs}. Haigh led out for 30,000, and Batt responded by moving all in. Haigh would have to call off her remaining 50,000, and that's what she did.

Haigh: {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Batt: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Haigh had flopped top pair, but she was well behind the overpair of Batt. The {j-Spades} on the turn didn't help her out, and the river came the {6-Clubs}. Batt collected the knockout, upping his stack to 358,000, while Haigh hit the rail.

Cajelais Wins a Few Off Cameron

Erik Cajelais was under the gun when he opened up the pot to 16,000. Cameron Somsky was directly on his left and made the call. The rest of the table was out the way and a {7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} flop was spread along the felt. Cajelais led for 20,000 here and Somsky called.

Both players checked the {8-Clubs} turn and it was on to the {4-Diamonds} river. Cajelais opted to fire back up here, betting 13,000. Somsky opted to let his hand go and sent the small pot to Cajelais.

Baron Keeping Pace

With about 80,000 in the middle and the board showing {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, an early position player checked, then Isaac Baron bet 56,000. After a long period of tanking, Baron's opponent let it go.

Baron continues to keep pace, adding chips and staying ahead of the average stack which at present is a little over 514,000 with 385 players left.
