Welcome back to PokerNews, the official media partner of the 2024 World Series of Poker and home of live updates from all bracelet events.
Today sees Day 1b of Event #89: $3,000 Mid-Stakes Championship No-Limit Hold'em here at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, a brand new event at the WSOP.
Day 1b, the second and final starting flight of this four-day event gets underway at 10 a.m. local time, with late registration open for 11 levels. This event allows for one reentry per flight and Day 2 registration for the first level. There will be 20-minute breaks every two levels, with a 60-minute dinner break at the end of Level 8 (~7 p.m.).
The starting stack is 40,000 chips, with the plan for Day 1 to play ten 60-minute levels. For the surviving players, Day 2 resumes at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, where another ten levels will play out. Day 3 follows the same structure as Day 2, with Day 4 playing down to a winner.
Day 1a saw 1,161 entrants add $3,099,870 to the prize pool. Only 324 of those starters made it through to Day 2. Jonathan Newman (573,500) claimed the chip lead, so anyone wishing to claim the overall lead must surpass his impressive total.
Romania's Florian Duta, who resides in the United Kingdom, finished his day with 389,000 chips, enough for fifth place overnight. Duta came close to winning a bracelet in 2022, finishing third in the online equivalent of the Big $500 for $57,143. He also has an eighth place finish in an online event this summer
