Tug of War

Level 28 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

The last few passes of the button have gone by without too much change in the chip counts.

Charles Moore gained a little ground by winning three pots in a row. The first one was a three-bet to 510,000 behind a Scott Stanko raise of 110,000. Stanko folded that one, and he folded the next hand to Moore's open-raise of 190,000. On the third hand of the series, Moore check-called a bet on the flop of a {5-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} board, then bet the river after the turn checked through. A stab of 225,000 was enough to get the job done.

Stanko pulled a bit of momentum back to his corner thereafter, though. Moore limped into a pot from his button, and Stanko raised to 140,000. Moore called again, then called another 175,000 on the {Q-Hearts} {J-Spades} {7-Spades} flop. The {A-Clubs} hit the turn, and he'd be forced to fold for another 400,000.

A Little Moore

Charles Moore limped in from the button, then called a raise to 160,000 from Scott Stanko.

The flop brought them {8-Spades} {7-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}, and Moore called another 220,000. They'd check it down the rest of the way behind the {Q-Spades} turn and {2-Diamonds} river.

Scott announced that he had just ace-high, and Moore tabled {8-Hearts} {10-Hearts} to win the pot with a pair.

Moore Doubles, Pulls Ahead

Charles Moore sweating his tournament life
Charles Moore sweating his tournament life

Scott Stanko opened for 110,000 on the button and Charles Moore called. The flop came {5-Spades} {8-Diamonds} {4-Clubs}, Moore checked and Stanko bet 110,000. Moore grabbed a large handful of T25,000 chips and said, "I raise this much." The total was somewhere in the 700,000 range.

Stanko wasn't intimidated and shoved for 1.41 million. Moore snap-called and tabled {A-Spades} {A-Diamonds}. Stanko turned up {10-Spades} {8-Spades} and needed help to seal up the tournament. But help wouldn't come when the board completed {2-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} and Moore doubled up.

Stanko Lets Moore Off the Hook

Level 28 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

Well, that was an interesting one. We'll do the best we can to describe what happened to you.

The pot began with Charles Moore limping in from the button, and Scott Stanko made a raise to 175,000. All right, all good so far. But things went awry when Moore announced, "Raise." He likes to put the call into the pot first when he raises, and that's what he did this time as well. But Stanko was a little too anxious. Moore's first batch of calling chips had barely hit the felt when Stanko announced, "All in!" Moore had not yet declared the amount of his reraise.

"What'd he say?" Moore asked. Stanko tried to keep quiet now, but the words had already escaped his lips. And now, after a few seconds, Moore realized it clearly.

There were two floormen right at tableside, so there wasn't any issue trying to figure out what happened. The ruling was that Moore was committed to make at least a minimum reraise, after which Stanko would be committed to his own reraise all in. Since Moore had declared his action already, it could not change before it got to Stanko, so his error was unable to be retracted now. Moore went ahead and put the 135,000-chip raise into the pot, but that was as far as he'd take it.

"Well, I don't have an all-in hand," he said as he mucked.

It seems likely that Moore got off the hook pretty easy there, as he was planning on raising significantly more until Stanko's premature declaration.

Casey Cavanaugh Eliminated in 3rd Place ($45,410)

All three players committed 80,000 to see the flop of {10-Spades} {3-Clubs} {10-Clubs}. Moore checked, Cavanaugh checked and Stanko bet 80,000. Moore folded and Cavanaugh check-raised to 275,000. Stanko moved all in fairly quickly and Cavanaugh called.

Stanko: {A-Clubs} {10-Hearts}
Cavanaugh: {10-Diamonds} {9-Clubs}

Stanko had Cavanaugh out-kicked and the board finished {8-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} and Stanko's ace on the river added insult to injury as Cavanaugh collected his belongings.

Stanko Retakes the Lead!

Scott Stanko
Scott Stanko

It's been a long time coming, but Scott Stanko is once again the chip leader.

The pot began with him limping first-in from the small blind. Charles Moore checked his big for a free flop, and the dealer spread out {6-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {2-Hearts}. Check-check.

The turn came the {K-Diamonds}, and it brought the action. Stanko led out with 80,000, but Moore announced a raise. He put out the call first, then added another 300,000 to it. His opponent was undeterred. Stanko reraised to 880,000 straight, and that put the decision back on Moore. He asked Stanko how much he had behind (1.02 million), tanked for a couple minutes, said, "Interesting," then folded.

Stanko is close to 3 million himself now, while Moore has tumbled back toward the two-million-chip mark.

Stanko Chips Up, Family Style

Casey Cavanaugh opened to 115,000 on the button, and both Scott Stanko and Charles Moore defended their respective small and big blinds.

All three men checked through the turn of the {4-Spades} {7-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {7-Hearts} {2-Clubs} board, and Stanko led out with 175,000 on the end. That folded Moore, but Cavanaugh made the reluctant call to see what was what.

Stanko tabled {10-Hearts} {J-Hearts} for top pair, and Cavanaugh mucked with a shake of the head.
