Cates also talked about his iconic Poker Players Championship outfits and a six-figure downswing he experienced at Bellagio during the summer.
This interview was filmed at the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) inside Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Picking up the action on the turn Amir Abtahi in the big blind was involved in a hand with Matias Gabrenja in the cutoff.
With the board reading 6?Q?J?9? and around 27,000 in the pot, Abtahi bet 8,000. Gabrenja moved all in for 19,000, sending his opponent deep into the tank. After several minutes, another player at the table called the clock but before a floor person made it to the table, Abtahi open folded Qx5x to concede the pot holding top pair.

A player in the hijack raised to 3,500, before Nicholas Funaro in the small blind three-bet all in for 18,000. After it folded back to the hijack, he made the call to put Funaro at risk.
Nicholas Funaro: 10?9?
Hijack: A?3?
The hijack was ahead with his ace high, until the board ran out 9?6?8?4?9? to improve Funaro to trip nines, and double up.

Charlie Reed and the player on the button were involved in a pot of 45,000 chips on a flop of 4?10?4?. Reed made a bet of 12,000 chips and was swiftly called by his opponent.
Reed then sized up to 30,000 on the 8? turn, and this time the button took a bit longer. After some minutes, Arthur Morris warned the button that he was going to call the clock after another minute would pass.
The button was not happy with Morris' action, stating: "You can call the clock whenever you want, but don't talk to me in the middle of a hand."
Morris apparently changed his mind after the reaction of the button, and immediately called for time. The button was given thirty seconds to act and folded near the end of his countdown.
Reed showed Q?7?, but the button seemed not even to notice as he and Morris argued some further, with other players at the table chiming in as well.

Gil Dezertzov was in the small blind and heads-up against an opponent under the gun going to the 7?J?5? flop. Dezertzov then led out for 7,000 and his opponent called.
The turn was the 2? and Dezertzov bet another 10,000. The under-the-gun player quickly called and they saw the 9? fall on the river.
Dezertzov then bet 15,000, sending his opponent deep into the tank. He eventually called and held his cards up over the middle of the table, already anticipating he was beat. Dezertzov confirmed his suspicions when he showed K?K? as he took the pot.
While this hand was taking place, a tournament official made an announcement about a lost player. The unfortunate player admitted he had three martinis at the dinner break and had spent the last hour trying to remember which table he was seated at. He finally found it after a few minutes to a round of applause from the room.

Ruben Correia rasied to 3,000 on the button and Mike Coombs defended his big blind.
Coombs check-called a 2,000 bet from Correia on the 5?A?4? flop and a 5,000 bet from Correia on the 10? turn.
Both players checked on the 4? river and Coombs turned over 7?5? for fives-up. Correia tabled 10?8? for a better two pair and took down the pot.
